Does CodeSignal Track Tab Switching?

Clicking to another tab mid-test feels risky. A lot of candidates assume CodeSignal sees everything and worry one stray click will sink them.

Here is what CodeSignal actually says.

In live CodeSignal interviews, yes: the interviewer can see when you click away from the coding editor. For regular assessments, CodeSignal does not say publicly that it logs tab switches as their own event. What it does document is screen recording in proctored tests and tracking of paste events.

Live interviews: the activity indicator

CodeSignal Interview has a small status light near the top of the editor. Its help center explains it plainly: "If it is red, the candidate has clicked away from the IDE."

It does not show where you went. CodeSignal says "While it cannot indicate where the candidate is navigating, noting how often the activity indicator turns red can provide additional insight into your candidate's session."

It is not only live, either. "The activity indicator can be viewed both during the interview and during the coding replay of your interview session."

Proctored assessments: your screen is recorded

In a proctored assessment, tab switching does not need a special log, because your screen is on video. CodeSignal's setup guide says "Please note that your screen will be recorded."

Setup also asks you to clean up first. CodeSignal says "Step 3 will prompt you to close all unrelated tabs, browser windows, and applications."

One of the common reasons a proctored result is not verified is:

• "Test-taker searched online for help (other than syntax-related searches)"

What gets flagged in any assessment

The documented signals are about what lands in the editor, not which tab is open. CodeSignal says it "tracks when candidates copy and paste text from another window, and what was copied."

Those events show up for the hiring team in the coding replay. CodeSignal says "From the test-taker's coding replay, you also can see if there were any suspicious paste events."

CodeSignal does not say publicly whether a non-proctored assessment records focus changes between tabs.

What this means for you

Treat live interviews as fully visible on this point. Every click away shows up as a red light, now or later in the replay.
