Does HireVue Detect Cheating?

A HireVue invite can feel like a black box. You record answers to a screen, nobody talks back, and you have no idea what is being logged in the background.

Here is what HireVue actually says in public.

Yes, HireVue has cheating signals, but they are flags for a human to review, not an automatic verdict. HireVue describes image snapshots and tab switch tracking in its interviews, and plagiarism checks in its coding assessments.

What HireVue says it tracks in interviews

HireVue described these features in its own blog:

• Snapshots: a feature that "periodically takes snapshots of candidates during interviews to confirm identity and flag suspicious activities."
• Tab switching: the "platform monitors if candidates switch tabs or windows during an interview."
• An honesty agreement: employers can show a checkbox before the interview that says "I agree to answer all questions in my own words."

HireVue calls tab switching a signal "warranting closer scrutiny." That is not the same as proof.

What changes in a coding assessment

HireVue sells a separate coding assessment product. Its product page says it can automatically detect "Potentially plagiarized submissions using best-in-class tools."

An older HireVue blog on plagiarism goes further. It says "HireVue uses Measure of Software Similarity Scoring (MOSS) to flag likely plagiarists." The same post lists signals like time spent in another browser window and when content is pasted.

It also warns that "High code similarity is an indication of suspicious activity. That said, it should not be used in isolation."

Who decides what happens next

HireVue does not make the call. Its help center says "HireVue provides support for the interviewing platform, but we are not involved in the hiring decision or the next steps."

So any flag goes to the hiring team, and they decide how much weight it gets. HireVue does not say publicly how many snapshots it takes, or which of these features are switched on by default.

What this means for you

The signals HireVue describes come from inside the browser: tab changes, pasted content, and camera snapshots. Clicking away from the interview window is the kind of behavior that gets logged.

Read the pre-interview agreement closely. It tells you what that employer counts as cheating.
