Does TestGorilla Record Your Webcam?

TestGorilla asks for camera access before the test starts. That one prompt makes a lot of candidates think they are being filmed the whole time.

Here is what TestGorilla documents.

For the skills tests, TestGorilla takes webcam snapshots, not continuous video. Its help center says snapshots are taken every 15 seconds. The exception is video questions and AI interviews, where your answers are recorded on camera.

Snapshots during the test

TestGorilla lists webcam snapshots as one of its anti-cheating monitors: "The system captures images of the candidate every 15 seconds to verify their identity."

It also watches the camera itself: "The system tracks if the camera is disabled or turned off." A disabled webcam is one of the examples it gives for its highest risk tier.

Who controls the camera setting

The employer does. TestGorilla says "Snapshots are the only part of our proctoring measures which can be deactivated."

Its settings guide explains why: "we understand that some companies may not want to use them, so we allow this feature to be disabled." So whether snapshots run depends on the company that sent you the test.

What the hiring team sees

Employers review snapshots on your results page. TestGorilla says "You can cycle through snapshots using the slider bar below the images."

A newer release note adds that snapshots "now play like a video with a scrubber, playback speed, and seek button." They are still stills taken every 15 seconds, shown in sequence.

If your camera fails, "the behavior log records a Webcam unavailable event with an amber warning." TestGorilla also tells employers that "if the webcam is not enabled, this could simply mean that the candidate" does not own one. It advises against rejecting anyone on that alone.

When real video is recorded

Some assessments include AI interviews, where "candidates respond to a set of video questions." Afterwards, TestGorilla tells employers they "can replay the interview, view the transcript, and search within the video."
