A camera prompt before a CodeSignal test can make your heart sink. You start picturing someone watching every move you make.

Here is what CodeSignal actually documents.

CodeSignal only records your webcam when the assessment is proctored. Its help center says "Some CodeSignal assessments include remote proctoring and an identity verification step in order to ensure the validity of your results." If yours is one of them, you are told before you start.

What gets recorded in a proctored test

When proctoring is on, the camera is only one part of it. CodeSignal says "Prior to the assessment, you will be prompted to share your camera, microphone, and screen for the duration of the assessment."

You also show a photo ID and take a picture of your face during setup. CodeSignal says "This data will be recorded and following the completion of your evaluation, it will be reviewed by the CodeSignal proctoring verification team."

The reviewers check things you can see on camera. Common reasons a result is not verified include:

• "Test-taker was not alone in the room during the assessment"
• "Test-taker got up from their seat during the assessment and exited the camera's view"

Who decides if the camera is on

You do not choose this. The company's settings do. For certified assessments, CodeSignal says "Your organization-level proctoring settings will dictate whether the assessments backed by a certified assessment will be proctored."

You will not be surprised by it either. CodeSignal says "You will see whether or not proctoring is required in your Assessments section before you take the assessment."

Live interviews can now be proctored too. CodeSignal announced "Proctoring for CodeSignal Interview is now generally available to all users."

What the hiring team sees

This part tends to calm people down. The company does not get your webcam footage.

CodeSignal says "Identification and proctoring data is reviewed by CodeSignal only and is stored and deleted within 15 days." It adds: "It will not be shared with the company who requested your coding report."

The company gets the outcome instead. CodeSignal "notifies the hiring company of the proctoring decision and receives an explanation for any rejected submissions."

What this means for you

No camera prompt means no camera recording. If you do get the prompt, assume the whole session is on video and treat the room like an exam hall: stay seated, stay in frame, keep it quiet.
