Does Codility Record Your Webcam?

A camera permission prompt on a coding test can make your stomach drop. You start wondering if someone is watching you the whole time.

Here is what Codility actually documents.

Codility only uses your webcam when the hiring team turns on proctoring for that specific test. Its help center says "Proctoring is disabled by default, giving recruiters the flexibility to choose when to enable it on new tests." If webcam capture is on, you have to allow it before you can start.

What Codility can capture from your camera

There are two camera modes in Codility's proctoring docs.

• Snapshots. Codility "Takes webcam snapshots of the candidate at regular intervals and when proctoring events occur."
• Full session recording. This mode "records the candidate's screen, webcam, and microphone throughout the entire test session."

Snapshots are not kept forever. Codility says "Screenshots are kept for 30 days and can be accessed in the candidate report."

Full video recording is listed as a paid add-on: "Video Proctoring is a premium feature."

You will know before it starts

This is not something that happens silently. Codility says candidates "will see a disclosure on the session's intro page" that tells them which behaviors recruiters can see.

For video recording, "Candidates will be required to opt into video proctoring before beginning." Once the test is running, you can see a recording indicator next to the timer.

If your test needs a camera, Codility's candidate FAQ is clear: "you must use a device with a connected or installed web camera." No camera prompt means no camera capture.

What the hiring team sees

Snapshots and recordings show up in the candidate report for reviewers. Codility also reminds hiring teams that "not all behavioral signals, on their own, are indicative of cheating."

Codility does not publish whether snapshots are analyzed automatically for things like looking away or a second face. Its docs only describe them being stored and reviewed in the report.
