Does HireVue Record Your Screen?

Most people picture a HireVue interview as just a camera and a question. Then a screen share prompt appears and the panic starts.
Here is what HireVue documents.
A standard HireVue On Demand interview records your video answers, not your screen. Screen sharing only comes up when the employer builds it into the interview, and your browser has to ask for permission first.
What HireVue records by default
HireVue's help center is clear about the core format: "Most interview questions will require a video recorded response."
It also says your "answers are recorded for a representative at their company to evaluate." That is your camera and microphone, not your desktop.
Before a recorded answer starts, you get prep time. HireVue notes that "During the prep time, you will see the disclaimer, Not Recording."
When your screen is part of it
HireVue has a help article on this exact topic. It says "Some On Demand interviews require candidates to share their computer screen while performing certain tasks on the computer in order to demonstrate skills and proficiencies."
Live interviews can include it too: "You may also be asked to share your screen during a Live interview."
A few practical limits apply:
- It needs "the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a desktop or laptop computer."
- "Screen sharing is not available for mobile devices."
- On a Mac, you may need to change security settings "to allow screen recording in the internet browser."
If none of that shows up, you are not in a screen share section.
What HireVue does not say
HireVue does not say publicly how long a shared screen is kept, whether the full session is saved, or exactly what the reviewer can play back. It also does not say which employers turn screen sharing on.
What it does say is that storage time is set by the employer. HireVue stores your data "based on the retention period (for the amount of time) chosen by the company" you are interviewing with.

What this means for you
In a normal video interview, the risk is what the camera and the interview window pick up. If you are asked to share your screen, assume anything visible on it can be seen.
